Why should School Students learn to ski or snowboard?

  • Skiing and snowboarding are great ways to spend quality time with family, friends, fellow students and teachers.
  • Skiing and snowboarding are perfect ways to get everyone out in the fresh air, learn new skills and make memories.
  • Skiing and snowboarding skills last a lifetime. Studies show that over fifty percent of all adult skiers/boarders began skiing/riding  before the age of twelve.
  • Skiing and boarding will improve the level of physical fitness among school aged children and teach them a healthy way to enjoy the outdoors in the winter.
  • Skiing and boarding are safe sports. Contrary to media attention, accident statistics for skiing average less than 2 per 1000 visits as compared to 21 per 1000 in hockey or football. (Ski Industry Statistics)
  • Skiing and boarding are affordable. Most ski areas offer special rates for schools. Long Lake's rates are $14.95/student from K- Grade 6 and $15.95/student grades 7-12.
  • Adult Skiing Supervisors (1 per 20 students) ski for free.
  • Students get excited about ski trips. These can be used as incentives for students. New curriculum ideas are endless: science, environmental studies as well as physical education. Some things are better learned outside the classroom in a fun environment.
  • Students and teachers arrive back at school refreshed, tired but refreshed!
